Special Valentines Day Flowers Ideas - Going Green: Eco-friendly Valentine's Day ideas

TUCSON - Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and while roses and chocolate are popular gifts, there are some eco-friendly ideas that are just as delicious and delightful for this February 14.

Editor-in-Chief of Green Living Magazine, Tishin Donkersley, stopped by the News 4 Tucson studios with some great ideas:

1. Set the mood - Whether it be dinner by candlelight or drinks at sunset, soft lighting affects our emotions. Studies suggest that soft lighting evokes a calm feeling throughout our body and can also send the message of beauty, tranquility and romance. To set the mood, start with soy candles by Gold Canyon. Soy candles are healthier than regular candles as they are made from soybeans, a natural, renewable source versus paraffin candles made from petroleum. Using soy candles supports local agriculture, and when burned, doesn't release chemicals into the air. Beeswax is another example of a healthier alternative than paraffin. Or go solar! Try a set of solar glass mosaic mood lights from hayneedle.com for your outside setting.

2. specialvalentines day flowers ideas or herbs - Nothing says you are my valentine like a bouquet of flowers, but if you want to give a gift that lasts, how about an herb plant? If you and your mate like to cook, what better gift than to use herbs for your special dinners together! If you are going to go traditional and purchase flowers, go to your local farmers market and choose in-season flowers. You might get a better deal than the flower shops and you are supporting local growers.

3. Use local in-season food for your dinner. When planning your special meal, take a look at your local farmers' market and create your dish out of the in-season selections! Some of the wonderful in-season winter foods include: all types of lettuce, citrus, broccoli, carrots, cilantro and many more.

Here is one recipe that will warm your heart from Chef Gabe Bertaccini of Il Tocco, his Garfagnina Farro soup is filled with delicious vegetables of the season!

MINESTRA GARFAGNINA DI FARRO | Garfagnina Farro soup

Preparation time: 15 minutes + overnight soaking (optional)
Cooking time: 2 - 3 ¾ hours
Serves 4

- 1 cup dried borlotti beans, soaked overnight in water to cover and drained and 3 cups fresh borlotti beans
- 2/3 cups olive oil plus extra for drizzling
- 1/3 cup finely chopped lardo (pork fat) or pancetta
- 2 ripe tomatoes, peeled, seeded and finely chopped
- 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 carrot, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
- 1 sprig sage, finely chopped
- 1 spring rosemary, finely chopped
- Scant 1 cup faro, rinsed
- Salt and pepper

If using dried beans, put them into a large pot and add water to cover. Bring to a boil and boil vigorously for 15 minutes, then drain. Return the beans to the pan, pour in water to cover and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 1 ½ - 2 hours, until tender. If using fresh beans, bring a large pan of water to a boil, add the beans, reduce the heat and simmer for 1 hour or until tender.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a shallow pan. Add the lardo or pancetta, tomatoes, celery, onion, carrot, garlic, sage and rosemary and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

When the beans are tender, drain them, reserving the cooking liquid. Add the beans with a little of the cooking liquid to the pan of vegetables and puree the mixture with a stick blender. Alternatively, press the beans through a sieve before adding them to the pan.

Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes, then stir in the reserved cooking liquid and bring to a boil.

Add the faro and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally for about 1 hour, until render. Taste and season with salt and pepper, then transfer the soup to a warmed tureen. Drizzle with 1-2 rings of olive oil and serve immediately.

4. Chocolate, an absolute for Valentine's Day, but purchase the dark and cacoa chocolate for the health benefits! Cacoa comes from the cacoa tree grown in the topics. The cacoa beans (or cocoa beans) are packed with health benefits - the beans contains flavanol antioxidents, has anti-clotting effects, can help lowering blood pressure, it has a low glycemic index and stimulates our brain - even Dr. Weil suggests a bit of chocolate to be incorporated into your diet.

5. Aromatherapy in a bottle - If you are looking for some bath and body products to top off the gift list, how about some certified organic lotions infused with essential oils These products by Intimate | Organics were developed with your health in mind as they are paraben-free, DEA-free and vegan. Parabens are a synthetic preservative used in foods and cosmetics. According to Livestrong.com, "Cornell University reports that a high lifelong exposure to estrogen can increase breast cancer risk. Estrogen, and synthetic chemicals that act like estrogen, play a role in stimulating the division of breast cells and affect other hormones that stimulate breast cell division." With every purchase from concon.org, proceeds go directly to help underserved communities domestically and foreign.

special valentines day flowers ideas - Old Ideas and new pop trends in 2012

With that dire Mayan doomsday prophecy hanging over the next year, we needed to stare extra-deep into our crystal ball to make predictions on 2012's world of entertainment.special valentines day flowers ideas

Knowing Armageddon may be in the cards, many important questions arise, such as: How can the world end before Christopher Nolan completes his Batman trilogy? And how can the world not end when Charlie Sheen premieres his new TV series?

Without further ado, and while the world is still spinning, we offer 12 pop-culture trends and events to look forward to in 2012.

Who killed Rosie Larsen? Who killed Ned Stark? We'll finally learn the answer to the former when AMC's The Killing returns for Season 2 in April. The answer to the second question is author George R.R. Martin, who wrote the series, A Song of Ice and Fire, that gave birth to HBO's celebrated Game of Thrones. The more important question: Who will Martin kill next (read the books for spoilers) when Game of Thrones returns for Season 2 in March?

More fabulous fables: Following the small-screen trend of Once Upon a Time and Grimm, Hollywood is poised to unleash multiple renditions of myths and legends on the big screen. Four films to keep any eye out for: director Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer (June 15); Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1), starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron; the horrorcomedy Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (March 2); and Mirror Mirror (March 16), which lends credence to my belief that Julia Roberts is in fact an evil witch (kidding). And if none of those classic fables suits your fancy - or if you can't stand the thought of seeing Stewart on screen without a creepy vampire brooding in the background - there is always the long-anticipated The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Dec. 14). J.R.R. Tolkien was a true genius, but he owed a great debt to the Brothers Grimm.

The new Harry Potter or Twilight? The Potter franchise is finished, and the end of Edward and Bella, in Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, looms on Nov. 16. Hollywood's hopes for a new blockbuster franchise may rest on Jennifer Lawrence's young but capable shoulders in The Hunger Games (March 23). The talented 21-year-old could act circles around the young cast members of those other franchises, so expect the fantasy series, based on the novels by Suzanne Collins, to deliver the goods.

New Year's TV babies: Alcatraz (Jan. 26); The Firm (Jan. 8); The Finder (Jan. 12); Luck (Jan. 29). Winter is the new fall, with a slew of hot shows. These four have the best chances of success. Alcatraz reunites Lost's J.J. Abrams and Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on Lost. (I'm quietly hoping the premiere is an alternative, more satisfying version of the Lost finale.) The Firm takes John Grisham's character Mitch McDeere into the future. Originally played by Tom Cruise in the 1993 film, Josh Lucas's fine acting chops will offer a less artificial, more nuanced, more credible version of the lawyer. The Finder offers a spinoff of Bones. Meanwhile, Luck tries its luck at doing for horse racing what Boardwalk Empire did for bootlegging. My prediction: Luck star Dustin Hoffman will contend with Steve Buscemi and Jon Hamm for the 2012 best-actor Emmy.

Bad boys: Daniel Craig's Bond is finally back in Skyfall (Nov. 9), in which 007's loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested. Bond's even bigger test, and one of our anticipated joys of the film? Javier Bardem as the villain. Meanwhile, Canadian bad boy Kiefer Sutherland - Jack Bauer himself - returns to the small screen in Touch. A preview will air Jan. 25 following American Idol, with the premiere pegged for March 19. Created by Tim Kring (Heroes), the show finds Sutherland playing the father of a mute son with special powers of prediction. (I predict a hit in 2012 - and a few more entertaining "Kiefer walks into a bar ..." tabloid stories.)

Mad Men and the Man: With stalled contract negotiations and endless delays, it's easy to forget that when we last saw Mad Men, it was finishing its best season yet. When the AMC show finally returns with new episodes in March, it will be the pop-cultural TV event of the year. Forget the ad agency - what will come of Don's hasty marriage to his young secretary (Montreal's lovely Jessica Paré)? Meanwhile, the Man, Canadian legend Leonard Cohen, releases a new album, Old Ideas, on Jan. 31. At 77, Cohen could still outcharm and out-seduce Don Draper any day of the week.

Caped crusaders: Spider-Man reborn; the Dark Knight hangs up his cape; the Avengers assemble. The Avengers (May 4) will test whether putting an orgy of heroes onscreen at the same time will in any way deter Robert Downey Jr. from stealing scenes. The Amazing Spider-Man (July 3) dumps Tobey Maguire for Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), and Kirsten Dunst for the ever-delightful and intelligent Emma Stone. Last, but not least, Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy ends with The Dark Knight Rises (July 20). As for the next Batman? I hear Tobey Maguire is looking for work.

Don't knock the Shins: It's been five years since one of indie music's finest bands, Portland's the Shins, released an album. Their previous effort, Wincing the Night Away, garnered a Grammy nod. Expect Port of Morrow - due in March - to make Top 10 album lists at this time next year. Good vibrations: A Beach Boys 50th-anniversary reunion tour is in the cards - with Brian Wilson participating - along with word of a new album (no date is set) and an appearance at the Grammys on Feb. 12. Can a reunion of the classic Barenaked Ladies lineup be far behind? I'd pay good money to see Steven Page sing Brian Wilson as an opener for Brian Wilson.

Lady Madonna: Madonna is back with a new album in March. Recently awarded a new three-album deal, and with a Super Bowl halftime slot on Feb. 5, things are looking good for Madge. But we all know she'll be worried about connecting with the kids and still appearing sexy. I expect awards-show makeout sessions with Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. (Or maybe all of them at once.)

Two reasons Doomsday may not come soon enough: Paul McCartney's Valentine's Day album, and Charlie Sheen's Anger Management. Sir Paul, who recently remarried, will release an album of love songs on Feb. 7, just in time to make a little mood music for Cupid's big day. Most of the songs will be romantic standards from the likes of Cole Porter, but the album's two new songs have cheese ball written all over them: Valentine and Only Our Hearts. And that brings us to Anger Management, Charlie Sheen's pending comeback slated for a yet-to-beannounced 2012 premiere on the FX network. (CTV bought Canadian distribution rights.) The show will offer a televised take on the mediocre 2003 film starring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson. That said, I wouldn't bet against a man fuelled by tiger blood; Charlie could very well be winning again very soon.

World War Z: Based on the brilliant book by Max Brooks and starring Brad Pitt, the film (due on Dec. 21) is about a researcher interviewing the international survivors of an alltoo-real zombie war. Given the 2012 release date, could this film also offer a forecast of how things will end for humanity? Start planning your zombie-invasion escape strategy, folks. (I already have a hang glider, a samurai sword and a box of Twinkies set up on my roof.)

special valentines day flowers ideas - Foundation donates another $11,294 for play about Wallace trial

The Newnan Community Theatre Company had a plan.

Then they got a playwright -- and a philanthropic gift to make their plan a reality. Members of the local theater group have been dreaming for years of having a play version of the John Wallace murder trial that could be staged locally -- possibly at the historic Coweta County Courthouse.

Wallace's actual trial took place in the majestic upper floor courtroom of the building in 1948.special valentines day flowers ideas

Last week it was announced that Jeff Bishop, a staff writer for The Newnan Times-Herald, has been selected to write the script for the play. The entire project got a monetary boost when the Charter Foundation of CharterBank awarded matching grant money to the non-profit.

In June 2010, the Charter Foundation breathed life into the project to create a play about the murder with an initial grant of $5,000. Now The Charter Foundation has donated an additional $11,294 in matching funds. The theater group has also received grants from the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission, Newnan Utilities, the Coweta Community Foundation and MainStreet Newnan.

There also have been donations from individuals.

In 1948, Wallace, a prominent Meriwether County landowner, was convicted of murdering a former tenant farmer, William Turner.
The 1904 courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse underwent an extensive restoration and renovation in 2009-2010.

It is envisioned that the play will become a signature annual event for NCTC, Newnan and Coweta County, with a goal of bringing tourists to downtown Newnan. The project's Citizen's Posse is planning trips to Colquitt to view "Swamp Gravy" and to Monroeville, Ala., to see "To Kill a Mockingbird" to observe how those local productions have become so successful.

Three dozen hopeful playwrights responded to a call for ideas for the play.

Bishop is a journalist and historian, having published around 10,000 newspaper and magazine articles. He is currently a graduate student at the University of West Georgia, and a candidate for an advanced degree in public history.

"I couldn't possibly be more excited," said Bishop, upon learning the news. "What a wonderful gift this is -- the chance to bring this one-of-a-kind story to life on the stage in my hometown, hopefully in the courtroom where it all took place."

The first act will focus primarily on Wallace and the events leading up to the murder. The second act will center on the investigation by Sheriff Lamar Potts and the key roles played by the two African-American farmhands whose testimony, it was asserted at the time, could never lead to the conviction of a white landowner on a murder charge.

The current schedule anticipates the first full production of the play to be presented in 2013.

The Charter Foundation provides grants anywhere CharterBank has retail branches in order to enhance the quality of life in the community. The foundation primarily makes grants in the areas of community and economic development, human and social needs, environmental protection and cultural and artistic projects. Last year, more than $373,000 was awarded by the foundation.

Ashley Schubert, local CharterBank regional president, took part in a presentation ceremony with Caroline Abbey, NCTC board chairman, and Dave Dorrell, the theater group's managing director.

The Wallace trial was the basis of a best-selling 1976 book, "Murder in Coweta County," by Margaret Anne Barnes. A television film -- starring Johnny Cash and Andy Griffith -- was based on Barnes' book.

Several other books have explored aspects of the Wallace case. Alabama author Dot Moore has written biographies of Wallace and of Mayhayley Lancaster, a Heard County fortuneteller who testified against Wallace.
